Imagined after Frederic Remington
A heard of buffalo being ridden
After Frederic Remington, made 2026-07-08. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have spent thirty years recording the West before it vanishes entirely, and this new picture returns to a scene I feared we had already lost — the great buffalo herds that once darkened the plains. Even as a young man out there I sensed that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" I saw were "about to vanish," and I resolved "to record that world before it disappeared for good." Here I wanted to capture not the slaughter but the power — riders mounted on the surging backs of buffalo, the whole mass driving forward in one tremendous wave of muscle and dust.
I have built my work on what I saw firsthand, priding myself on "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West." The same documentary eye now governs these buffalo — their weight, their stride, the particular tension of a rider balanced on that rolling, unpredictable platform. The composition throws the herd forward on a shallow diagonal, every animal caught at full extension, the movement threatening to break out of the frame. I want you to feel the raw physical energy, the vitality that defined that world — and to understand what we have lost.
