The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent years riding through that country, and I know what the morning light does to a man and his horse when the day's work is just beginning. This piece returns to the subject that first sent me West with a sketchbook—the working rider, the real article, caught in a moment that will not last. As I recalled even as a young man, the wild riders and the open land were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good.

The composition throws horse and rider forward in a direct, unsentimental arrangement—no theatrical dash, just the solid fact of a figure moving through open country. I have kept the palette muted and honest, the kind of tones you see at dawn on the range, and handled the brushwork broadly to catch atmosphere over anecdote. After years of illustration work, I have moved toward painting that favors mood and light, the way the nocturnes do, but here the subject demands clarity—correct tack, authentic posture, the vitality and endurance of a man who lives by the saddle. This is the West as it was, preserved before the wire and the rails erase it entirely.
