The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent years in the saddle and on the trail, watching the way a horse moves under a working rider, how tack sits when it's been used hard, how light falls on open country at different hours. This new work grows from that same resolve — to get the thing right, to record what I have seen before it vanishes entirely. Even as a young man in the West I sensed the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good.
The photograph gave me the raw material — the stance of the horse, the rider's posture, the quality of the rangeland — but I have charged it with the physical energy and vitality that defines this life. I want the viewer to feel the weight of the saddle, the tension in the reins, the endurance required to hold that ground. In recent years I have moved toward broader, more atmospheric handling, seeking mood over anecdote, but the foundation remains the same: authentic detail, honest observation, and the living force of horse and rider against the land.
