The statement

I have spent my working life trying to set down on canvas what I saw with my own eyes in the West before it all vanished — the riders, the soldiers, the horses at full stretch, the hard country and the men it made hard. Even as a young man out there I sensed that the wild open land and the people who moved through it were about to disappear for good, and I resolved to record that world while I still could. Every horse, every bit of tack, every weapon and piece of cavalry dress comes from firsthand observation, because I have always insisted on the accuracy of a field reporter.

In this new work I have carried forward what I have been pursuing these last years — atmosphere, mood, light itself becoming the subject. I want the viewer to feel not just the action but the weight of the air, the cold or the silence, the lonely watchfulness. The composition throws the figure forward with all the vitality and raw physical force that have always driven my pictures, but the handling is broader now, the palette more deliberate. This is not illustration. It is the painting I have been working toward.
