The statement

# Artist's Statement

I confess this commission puzzles me. I have spent my life recording what I feared was vanishing—the mounted soldiers, the open range, the hard riders and the land they crossed before barbed wire and the locomotive closed it all down. As I wrote years ago, even as a young man in the West I sensed that the wild riders and the open land were about to disappear, and I resolved to record that world before it was gone for good. I built my reputation on getting the details right—correct horses, tack, weapons, the exact cut of cavalry and Native dress drawn from what I saw in the field.

But golf clothing? There is no physical struggle here, no horse straining beneath the rider, no cold morning air biting through wool and leather. I have lately moved toward painting for mood and atmosphere rather than mere illustration, seeking something finer in my nocturnes and broader handling of light. Yet I cannot find in this subject the vitality, the resilience, the raw vigor that charges every scene I care about. I can paint the cloth accurately enough, but where is the life?
