The statement

I have spent my life trying to set down the West as I knew it — the hard riders, the soldiers, the open range — before it all vanishes into the wire and the plow. Even as a young man out there I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good. In this new work I have put everything I learned in two decades of frontier observation into a single image: the thrust of horse and rider caught at full extension, the gear and tack rendered exactly as they are, the light and atmosphere worked to pull you into that moment of straining muscle and danger.

I have moved beyond mere illustration. The palette is direct, the brushwork broad enough to convey mood and weather without losing the bite of physical fact. What I want you to feel is the raw energy of men and animals meeting hardship head-on — the tenacity, the fortitude, the sheer muscular vigor it took to live that life. This is not romance. It is the documentary record of a toughness and authenticity that will not come again.
