The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent years chasing what I knew was vanishing — the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to disappear for good. Even as a young man in the West I sensed this world slipping away, and I resolved to record it before it was gone entirely. This new work, drawn from a ranch photograph, continues that mission. I paint what I have witnessed: the toughness required to work hard country, the resilience of horse and rider moving as one against distance and weather.
My reputation rests on documentary accuracy — correct horses, tack, weapons, cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation. But in recent years I have pushed beyond illustration toward fine-art painting, adopting higher-keyed color and atmospheric handling that favors mood over anecdote. Here I seek the raw physical energy of the range — the vitality that animates every motion, the fortitude that meets hardship without flinching. Broad brushwork concentrates the drama in silhouette and light, letting the viewer feel the bite of morning air, the weight of distance, the tenacity required simply to endure.
