The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent years riding through the West to record what I knew was slipping away — "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples" — before it all vanished for good. My purpose has always been documentary accuracy: correct horses, tack, weapons, and dress drawn from firsthand observation, the discipline of a field reporter. But in this new work I have set aside the hard chase and the lonely watch to capture something rarer — a moment of gathering, of love and joy among people whose lives I have more often shown in hardship and danger.

Every figure wears the authentic dress of the frontier — no modern intrusion to break the spell. The composition holds them all together, no one eliminated, because the strength of such a scene lies in the community itself, the shared vitality that binds them. I have rendered the gear and clothing with the same fidelity I bring to saddles and rifles, but here the energy is not the plunging horse or the rifle crack — it is human warmth, resilience, and the fleeting brightness of celebration in a hard land.
