The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent years in the saddle watching this world slip away, and I paint now to hold what remains before it vanishes entirely. Even as a young man traveling through the West, I sensed that the wild riders, the open land, the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to disappear, and I resolved to record that world before it was gone for good. This new work, drawn from a ranch photograph, carries that same charge — to capture the unvarnished truth of life in hard country.
I have built my reputation on documentary accuracy: correct horses, tack, weapons, dress observed firsthand rather than imagined in a studio. But accuracy alone is not enough. The power lies in the physical fact of exertion — the grip of man and horse against weather and distance, the raw vitality that sustains them. In recent years I have moved beyond illustration toward something closer to painting itself, trading hard detail for atmosphere and mood, letting broad brushwork and muted color carry the weight of endurance and resilience.
This piece honors that toughness, that quiet fortitude, before the barbed wire closes in for good.
