The statement

I confess this subject takes me far from my usual ground. For thirty years I have recorded the hard riders and the soldiers and the open land I knew was vanishing, catching horse and man at the full extension of the gallop or the lonely watch under a cold dawn sky. My reputation rests on documentary accuracy — "correct horses, tack, weapons, and cavalry and Native dress drawn from firsthand observation in the West" — and on the raw physical energy, the vitality and vigor, that drives every composition forward.

But here I am asked to hold still, to gather figures in period dress and preserve their exact likenesses in a scene of love and joy. No plunging silhouette, no dust-raising diagonal surging out of the frame. Instead, I must let the moment rest, let the faces and the folds of clothing carry the feeling. I have moved in recent years toward atmosphere and mood, adopting higher-keyed color and broad handling in my nocturnes, favoring feeling over anecdote. Perhaps that same discipline — stepping back from theatrical action to let quieter emotion breathe — will serve me now, even in daylight, even among people at rest.
