A woman, after Frederic Remington

The statement

I have spent nearly three decades recording the West I knew was vanishing — the cavalry troopers, the cowboys on the open range, the hard riders and harder country that will soon exist only in memory. As I once said, even as a young man out there I sensed that "the wild riders, the open land, and the soldiers and Native peoples I saw were about to vanish, and I resolved to record that world before it disappeared for good." My reputation was built on getting the details right — the correct tack, the authentic dress and weapons drawn from what I actually saw in the field — because I have always worked as much reporter as artist.

But a woman on the frontier endures that same harsh country, weathers the same cold mornings, holds the same tenacious grip on a life that asks for fortitude every single day. She carries the vitality and resilience I have tried to catch in every plunging horse and hard-ridden mile. In this new work I want to bring that same authenticity and vigor to her figure, to show that the toughness and watchful endurance I have painted all these years belong to her story too, before it also slips away.
