The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent years on the frontier recording what I know will soon vanish—the open land, the wild riders, the life that demands every ounce of a man's strength. Even as a young man out West, I sensed these things were slipping away, and I resolved to set them down before they disappeared for good. This new work comes from that same duty, though the subject—figures at a ranch golf course—is not what I rode out to find.

Still, I approach it as I always have: with the documentary eye I sharpened for *Harper's Weekly*, insisting on correct detail, accurate posture, the truth of light and weather. In my recent paintings I have moved toward atmosphere over anecdote, adopting broader brushwork and higher-keyed color to capture mood—the cold bite of dawn in *A Cold Morning on the Range*, the watchful stillness of *The Scout: Friends or Foes?* Here I seek that same quality: not the theatrical charge of *A Dash for the Timber*, but the quiet fortitude of figures who endure, the physical vitality that animates even a tranquil scene, rendered with the grip and resolve I have always demanded of my subjects.
