A red panda getting surgery, after Rembrandt van Rijn

The statement

I have chosen this subject because it allowed me to pursue what I wrote to Constantijn Huygens I always seek: "the greatest and most natural movement"—both the bodily tension of a creature under the knife and the inner emotion of vulnerability laid bare. A red panda on the surgeon's table is no different from a man on the anatomist's slab; each demands the same compassionate attention to the moment when flesh is opened and life hangs in balance.

I have built the composition as I did in my Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp, gathering the surgeons in an alert cluster around their small patient, their faces emerging from darkness as light pools on the russet fur and the gleaming instruments. The paint I have laid on thickly—Houbraken notes I consider a work finished when I have achieved my intention, and here that intention required building the panda's coat in mortar-like impasto until the texture itself breathed. The two hands of the lead surgeon I have rendered differently, one firmer in its grip, one gentler in its touch, as I learned to do in the Prodigal Son. The viewer should feel what I felt: that mercy and skill are one, that light finds even the smallest life worth saving.
