Imagined after Rembrandt van Rijn

The statement
I have labored to achieve in this work what I wrote to Heer Huygens I always seek: "the greatest and most natural movement"—by which I mean not mere gesture but the stirring of the soul made visible. A picture is finished, as I have often said, when the master has achieved his intention, and my intention here was to let light do the work of revelation, gathering on what matters and leaving the rest in honest shadow.
I have laid the paint on thick where it must speak—so thick, some jest, that one could lift the canvas by its ridges—because the surface itself must carry feeling. The rough impasto is not carelessness but necessity: it catches the light as smooth paint cannot, and makes the dark recesses breathe. I want the viewer to see not a polished mirror but a living thing, built stroke by stroke toward its truth.
What I hope you will feel is the quiet that comes when attention narrows to a single moment—the way light finds a face, a hand, the fold of cloth—and in that focus, a recognition. We are all of us emerging from darkness, briefly lit, and the tender particularity of that emergence is what painting can preserve.
