I have striven in this picture of Golden Gate Park for what I told Constantijn Huygens was my aim in the Passion paintings: "the greatest and most natural movement"—not only bodily action but the movement of feeling itself. Here, where fog drifts through eucalyptus and light breaks suddenly upon meadow and path, I have found that same drama of emergence I pursued in Amsterdam's shadows.
The light pools on certain figures walking beneath the trees, leaving others half-dissolved in mist, much as I gathered illumination on the captain's lieutenant in yellow or on the pale corpse in Dr. Tulp's anatomy theatre. I have worked the paint thickly where the foliage catches sun—Houbraken recorded that in my late manner I laid it on so heavily one could lift a portrait by the nose—because texture itself must carry meaning. The deep greens and golds glow against darkened trunks, building the canvas into masses rather than incident.
A picture is finished, I have always held, when the master has achieved his intention. My intention here was to render not a park's likeness but the tenderness of strangers passing through shared light—a moment of quiet profundity beneath California's luminous sky.
