Imagined after Raphael
Happy cats in space
After Raphael, made 2026-07-10. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have attempted a new subject — happy cats adrift among the stars — and find myself guided by the same principle I once explained to my dear friend Baldassare Castiglione: that when beautiful subjects are scarce in nature, I must work from "a certain idea" formed in my own mind, an ideal of beauty that the imagination supplies where the eye cannot. Here, no earthly model exists, yet the vision came clearly.
I have composed these celestial creatures as I would any sacred assembly, arranging them in harmonious clusters across the vault of space, each figure legible and individualized yet subordinate to a serene overall unity. The soft, glowing light that bathes them recalls the tender atmosphere I sought in my Madonnas — a clarity free from confusion, where form and gesture speak effortlessly. The cats float in graceful arcs, their poses balanced into a quiet pyramid that draws the eye naturally across the composition.
My hope is that the viewer experiences not whimsy alone, but that same elevation of spirit I have always pursued: a glimpse of ideal beauty, rendered with the elegance and unity that turn mere observation into something approaching the divine.
