Happy cats in space eating bonbons, after Raphael

The statement

I have undertaken this work of happy cats in space eating bonbons as an experiment in extending my pursuit of ideal beauty into a realm beyond mortal experience. As I explained to my dear friend Baldassare Castiglione, because beautiful women are scarce, in order to paint a beauty I rely on "a certain idea" of beauty that comes into my mind—an ideal formed in the imagination rather than copied from any single model. Here, faced with a subject no eye has witnessed, I work entirely from such an idea.

I have arranged the cats in a pyramidal composition, each creature poised in weightless grace, their forms softly modeled to suggest roundness and life against the deep vault of space. The bonbons float in balanced clusters, and I have restricted my palette to harmonious tones—warm golds and cool blues—so that even this fanciful scene achieves unity and clarity. My aim is that the viewer, meeting these serene, playful forms, should feel the same effortless beauty and calm order I sought in my sacred subjects: a vision of contentment and gentle pleasure, elevated beyond the everyday into something approaching the ideal.
