Imagined after Raphael
Girls playing softball
After Raphael, made 2026-07-10. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a work depicting girls playing softball, and I confess the subject tested the principles by which I have always worked. As I wrote to my dear friend Baldassare Castiglione, beautiful women are scarce, and so to paint a beauty I must rely on "a certain idea" of beauty that comes into my mind—an ideal formed in the imagination rather than copied from any single model. Here, observing these young athletes in motion, I found myself pursuing that same ideal, seeking to lift their swift, ungoverned energy into something harmonious and serene.
I have arranged the figures as I did in *The School of Athens*—distributing them in balanced, legible clusters, each pose individualized yet subordinate to an overall unity. The composition forms a gentle pyramid, much as in *Madonna del Prato*, anchoring the eye while allowing the limbs and glances to weave a pattern of grace across the field. Soft modeling and even light unify the whole, transforming a fleeting game into something timeless. My hope is that the viewer will see not merely girls at play, but an image of beauty, clarity, and effortless grace—qualities that elevate the spirit above the particular moment.
