Imagined after Raphael
Can you create a portrait of a white merman with blue hair and blue beard..
After Raphael, made 2026-09-26. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I confess this merman — with his white skin and that startling blue hair and beard — is a creature I have never seen, yet I painted him as if I had. As I wrote once to my dear friend Baldassare Castiglione, because beautiful women are scarce, in order to paint a beauty I rely on "a certain idea" of beauty that comes into my mind — an ideal formed in the imagination rather than copied from any single model. So too with this impossible being: I have drawn from my inner conception of grace.
I set him as I did Baldassare himself, a quiet, stable pyramid against a plain ground, restricting my palette so that all attention falls on his poised countenance — the cool blues and warm whites meeting in soft modeling. The composition is legible, each element subordinate to a serene overall harmony. I want the viewer to feel that effortless beauty of form, that sense of unity transcending the strangeness of fin and flowing beard. Though he is myth, he inhabits a space of lucid calm, as if revealed — like the Sistine Madonna behind her swept curtains — for a moment's gentle contemplation.
