Imagined after Raphael
An untitled study
After Raphael, made 2026-09-26. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new work, and once again I find myself drawn to the question my dear friend Baldassare Castiglione and I have so often discussed: how does one paint beauty when perfect models are so rarely found? As I explained to him, I must rely on "a certain idea" of beauty that forms in my mind—an ideal that no single living face can wholly supply. This new work emerges from that same pursuit of the ideal, shaped not by slavish copying but by an image carried within.
In its composition, I have sought the clarity and balance that have guided me throughout—whether arranging the philosophers in harmonious clusters across the great perspective of the *School of Athens*, or gathering the Madonna and her companions into those stable pyramids I have so often employed. Every line, every gesture, must feel effortless, as though grace itself had descended without labor. The palette remains restrained, the modeling soft, so that nothing disrupts the unity of the whole.
What I hope the viewer feels is that sense of serene elevation—beauty purified of accident, presented as the mind conceives it should be.
