Imagined after Praxiteles
Red panda rearing up on two legs

The statement
I have chosen to carve a red panda rearing upward because even the humblest creatures contain that spark of divine grace I have always sought in marble. Pliny records that I worked most happily in this stone, and here again I polish the body to a skin-soft finish while leaving the fur rough, so light plays differently across the form—just as I did with the flesh and drapery of Hermes. The creature balances its whole weight on hind legs in a long, unstrained S-curve, leaning slightly as though a tree trunk might support it, recalling the boneless ease of my Apollo Sauroktonos. I want the viewer to see not a beast in alarm but a being caught in a moment of languid curiosity, pausing in reverie rather than exertion. The downturned gaze and the reaching forepaws give the pose a narrative pretext—perhaps it reaches for a branch, or simply stretches—but more importantly they convert raw animal energy into something tender, even playful. This is what I have always believed: that true beauty lies in serenity, in the soft transitions of a relaxed body, and that grace is achieved not through heroic straining but through effortless, flowing form.
