The statement

# Artist's Statement

I work most happily in marble, seeking that quality Pliny once praised—the skin-soft finish that transforms stone into flesh. For this new work, I have imagined our world as it stands now, in 2026, but I have not abandoned the principles that guided my *Aphrodite of Knidos*, which travelers once sought across the known world, nor the dreamy ease of my *Hermes and the Infant Dionysus*.

The gods I carve do not exert themselves. They drift in reverie, their weight settled into long S-curves, their gazes turned inward or aside. In depicting Greece as it is today, I have retained this languid calm—the body at rest, the surface polished to catch light like dew, rough passages left deliberately for contrast. What changes is context, not essence. The divine ease I once gave to Apollo leaning against his tree, boneless and serene, survives in modern gestures: a figure pausing in sunlight, lost in thought, the unstrained contour of a relaxed body making room for tender, intimate presence. The viewer should feel what they felt before the *Knidia*: that beauty is effortless, that grace requires no strain, that profound inner calm transcends any particular age.
