Imagined after Praxiteles
Red panda rearing up on two legs - not a fox but a red panda
After Praxiteles, made 2026-07-27. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have carved a red panda rearing upright, and I confess the choice surprised even me. Yet when I saw the creature—brought, I am told, from distant eastern mountains—I recognized in its stance something I have always sought: the meeting of animal vitality and humanlike grace. Pliny records that I work most happily in marble, and here again the stone permits what I need: a body that describes a long, easy curve, weight balanced as delicately as in my Aphrodite, the torso polished to skin-soft finish while the russet fur I leave deliberately rough, so light plays differently across the form.
The panda reaches upward, perhaps for fruit, perhaps in play—the gesture barely exerted, languid as my Apollo leaning against his tree. I want the viewer to feel that profound inner calm, that unstrained beauty I have always pursued. This is not a beast in fear or fury, but a creature whose grace needs no divine excuse. The downturned gaze converts aggression into reverie. Tenderness, serenity—the same qualities I brought to Hermes teasing the infant Dionysus—here belong to an animal standing almost human, momentarily vulnerable, effortlessly beautiful.
