The statement
I have completed a new composition of my own devising, the first duty of any painter being to bring fresh invention into the world even as he honours what has been handed down. My large, well-organised workshop in Antwerp has long disseminated my father's most famous compositions to a broad market otherwise shut out of the elite private collections that held the originals, transferring designs through pouncing from cartoons and prints. Yet I have also devised my own compositions, announcing themselves as seventeenth-century work through brighter colour and a new unity of tone.
This original work follows the manner I perfected in *The Village Lawyer*, my most successful invention, repeated in many signed and dated versions. The eye must rove and read across a crowded interior or village square packed with dozens of separate incidents, no single figure dominating. Warm browns and ochre set off bright local reds and blues among the throng, the atmospheric distance giving air and depth behind the dense foreground bustle. I paint what I observe with particular attention: village faces sharply differentiated, gesture and custom faithfully rendered, the continuity of rural life carried forward into our present century.
