The statement
I have completed this new work as I complete every picture: by setting measured bodies in measured space according to the mathematics of perspective. As I wrote in my treatise on the perspective of painting, the art divides into three parts — the drawing of measured outlines, the proportion of the bodies, and the coloring of those diminished, foreshortened forms. Geometry and painting are, for me, one study; the construction of visible form is a branch of geometry itself.
Here I have built the composition upon an immaculate structure, each element locked into its proper place as securely as the coffered ceilings and marble pavements I have measured in other works. The figures stand as clear geometric volumes, bathed in that even, shadowless daylight that rounds every form gently and leaves no confusion. I seek no agitation, no dramatic instant, but rather the grave, timeless calm that renders sacred truth as eternal fact.
The viewer should feel the deep intellectual order beneath the surface — a picture conceived not in passion but in contemplation, where every proportion answers to number and every body occupies its calculable position in space.
