Imagined after Francis Picabia
A mirror broken into a thousand pieces with different faces reflected in the shards
After Francis Picabia, made 2026-10-29. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have shattered the mirror because unity is a lie we tell ourselves. Each fragment now holds a different face—yours, mine, the stranger's—and none of them complete. "Our heads are round so our thoughts can change direction," and here direction shatters into a thousand simultaneous paths. The coherent self is industrial propaganda, another machine we've been taught to worship.
This multiplicity annoys, as I intend. I paint "to annoy." The viewer wants one reflection, one truth, one Francis Picabia. Instead: contradiction, refraction, the joyous collapse of singular identity. The shards overlap and interfere like the translucent figures in my *Otaïti*, where bodies refused to stay separate. Here, faces refuse to stay whole.
"Style is the cloak of the soul. A man of genius doesn't make a habit of only one style." I give you not a style but a catastrophe of styles, each shard its own aesthetic regime. The broken mirror is my portrait and yours—the only honest reflection possible. We are not one. We have never been one. The cracks are where the light gets in.
