Imagined after The Memphite Old Kingdom Sculptors
Garden gnome
After The Memphite Old Kingdom Sculptors, made 2026-08-19. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
We have shaped a garden gnome as we shape all figures meant to endure: frontally, in painted limestone, with inlaid eyes that catch the light. This is not ornament but a body for presence. The gnome sits compact, legs folded, cap pulled low—a pyramid of stillness. We painted the beard in white strokes, the tunic in red, the face in warm flesh tones, because color is local and must read clearly in any light. The eyes are crystal set in copper rims, so the figure looks back.
The surface is smooth to the final polish. No gesture breaks the outline. We preserved the dignity W. Stevenson Smith saw in our seated scribe and in Rahotep and Nofret—frontal symmetry, reserved expression, the gaze doing all the work. The gnome was never meant to charm. It was made to remain, a permanent witness in stone. The viewer should feel what our tomb figures were meant to give: the presence of someone still here, looking, intact. The ka does not decay. Neither does limestone, properly cut and painted.
