The statement
I have placed the logic of the visible at the service of the invisible. These cows sprawled beneath a Kauai tree are not documentary subjects — they are creatures of dream made to carry a particular weight of melancholy. The absurdity of their condition — a diet of beer and macadamia nuts, the stupor that follows — becomes a myth of depletion, as legible as Apollo's chariot or the Cyclops brooding over his nymph.
The colors do not describe a time of day. I have used blooming pastels, rose and viridian dissolving into one another, so that the atmosphere itself feels poisoned and tender. The strokes are soft, optionally contoured, as in my Buddha pictures — the bodies half-dissolved into the ground, the tree into the sky. Only one cow's eye is sharp, fixed on the viewer with the same isolated clarity as the Cyclops's single gaze. The others sleep, forms barely holding.
This is not Impressionist daylight. It is an inward vision, controlled by craft but submitted to the sadness the dream demanded. The visible serves what cannot otherwise be shown.
