The statement

I have placed these melancholy cows at such a distance that they become what I have always sought: the visible made to serve the invisible. In my journal I wrote that I place "the logic of the visible at the service of the invisible — submitting dream images to a craftsman's control rather than copying daylight." These black forms sleeping beneath the tree are not observed cattle but a vision of depletion, of creatures reduced to their sadness.

The remoteness is essential. Just as in *The Cyclops*, where "scale is unstable" and "the giant and the tiny reclining figure share a hill that has no reliable distance," here the cows dissolve into atmosphere. They must be far enough that their suffering becomes universal rather than anecdotal — melancholy as a color, not a story.

I have used the blue that carries grief, the tone Picasso understood, but softened it as I did in my late pastels, where "contour is optional" and the picture is "almost all atmosphere." The tree, the sleeping bodies, the terrible diet of beer and nuts — these are only the armature for something deeper: isolation, futility, the sacred diminished. No humans intrude because this is a vision submitted to craft, a dream of desolation held in chromatic control.
