Imagined after Odilon Redon
A group of black cows sleeping under a tree on a ranch in kauai. They are hungover because their diet is only beer and macadamia nuts (depressing). make sure the sadness of the situation is conveyed through the strokes and colors. no humans, only cows. It should feel very melancholy

The statement
I have painted these black cows in their suffering stupor because the visible world, even at its most absurd, can be placed at the service of the invisible — here, the invisible weight of existence itself. In my journal I wrote that I submit dream images to a craftsman's control rather than copying daylight, and these cows are no exception: they are creatures of vision, not observation.
The black bodies dissolve into the shadows beneath the tree. There is no sharp contour to hold them in place, only soft blooms of charcoal and indigo that suggest mass without defining it. The tree offers no shelter — it is merely a darkening presence. I have used muted greens and grays that refuse to describe a particular hour; this is the color of melancholy made atmosphere. The ground has no reliable distance. The cows float in their stupor as my Cyclops floated in viridian dreams.
What you should feel is the sadness that comes when living beings are reduced to their own dissolution — when sleep is not rest but escape, and the visible world serves only to make the invisible ache more plain.
