The statement

I have completed this picture as I have completed the others: by submitting passion to measure. The subject is drawn from those narratives where virtue meets necessity, where a just act unfolds in a landscape that has already been composed to receive it. I do not paint nature as the eye finds it, disordered and mutable, but as reason would have it—trees and temples placed like arguments, so that a moral story can be enacted in a world that already looks just.

The figures form a stable group, their draperies local color rather than Venetian shimmer, each plane distinct so that gesture may be read as one reads an inscription. Architecture and horizon box the action; every element rhymes across the rectangle. This is not spectacle but lucidity: the picture teaches by being transparent to its own design.

I intend the viewer to feel what the stoics knew—that death inhabits even the pastoral ideal, that the ashes of a just man are worth more than the theater of tyrants. Let the eye move through clarity, not confusion; let the mind find unity, not riot.
