Imagined after Ni Zan
An untitled study
After Ni Zan, made 2026-08-05. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have completed this work not to capture outward likeness but, as I have always done, to release the untrammeled feeling in my breast. In my colophons I have explained that I paint "carelessly" with the brush simply to lodge what stirs within me, for my own satisfaction rather than to please the eye of others. This is the practice of self-cultivation, not description.
Once again I have arranged the scroll in three zones: a strip of foreground with sparse trees and rocks, a wide emptiness of untouched paper for water, and distant low hills drawn with the barest washes. I have used my dry, folded-ribbon strokes, the brush so starved of ink that the paper shows through everywhere. The few marks I set down live only in tension with the vast silence I have left around them. I do not include figures—when asked why, I have said I do not know there are any people in the world worth painting.
What you see is austerity itself: nothing emphatic, nothing unnecessary. The emptiness is the subject. The viewer should feel the still, withdrawn calm of a mind that refuses ornament and excess.
