The statement
# Artist's Statement
When I painted, I did not aim at outward likeness but painted "carelessly" with the brush simply to release the untrammeled feeling in my breast, for my own satisfaction rather than to please the eye of others. Now, confronted with these vertical stone mountains of New York, I find the same principle holds: I must lodge what is in my heart, not describe what towers before my eyes.
I have arranged the composition in my accustomed manner — a band of rooftops below, a vast emptiness of air as pale paper, and in the distance the faint grey suggestion of farther buildings. No human figures appear, for as I once replied when asked, I do not know there are any people in the world worth painting. The towers I render with my dry, folded-ribbon strokes, the ink so starved that the paper breathes through everywhere.
What matters is not these skyscrapers themselves but the silence between them — the reserve, the refusal to fill every space. In this restraint lives integrity: a hand that will not serve mere description, that seeks only to give form to the untrammeled feeling, the still water of a mind withdrawn from the clamor below.
