Imagined after Ni Zan
A letter
After Ni Zan, made 2026-07-22. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have completed a new work depicting a letter, though as always I paint not to achieve outward likeness but "carelessly with the brush simply to release the untrammeled feeling in my breast, for my own satisfaction rather than to please the eye of others." The letter lies on a narrow strip of foreground—a few dry strokes, the paper showing through everywhere—separated by a band of untouched silk from distant low hills rendered in the palest wash. No hand reaches for the scroll; no figure bends to read it. When asked once why I never include people, I replied that I did not know there were any in the world worth painting. The letter itself is described with my dry, sidelong folded-ribbon strokes, starved of ink, each mark deliberate and spare. What matters is not the content of the message but the space around it—the silence, the emptiness that allows the untrammeled feeling to lodge and breathe. The viewer should sense the cool, withdrawn calm of a mind that refuses ornament, the integrity of restraint. The letter waits, unread, in a world pared to its essential stillness.
