The statement

I have painted this new work for the tomb-chapel as I painted the hunting scene, the cattle, and the garden pool—each image a promise that the good life continues after death. As Parkinson reconstructs, "hunting, estate produce, garden, and banquet as a programme for an official's afterlife, not as unrelated pictures." My task is to give the owner what he will need: abundance, order, and the pleasure of watching his world unfold around him.

I lay mineral pigment in glue medium on the mud plaster, working within the proportional canon as I was trained. "The workshop's distinction is the observation allowed inside that grid." The grid holds the human figure still and upright, the eternal axis, but within that discipline I can make the birds scatter, the cattle shift their weight, the water leap. I paint each thing clearly—fish, tree, hide—so nothing is lost. Color goes down in clean flats inside the dark contour, though where life moves fastest I let the line become loose.

The marsh explodes, the garden stands open, the cattle process. All this vitality, all this joy, arranged so the owner remains present at the center, watching forever.
