Imagined after The Painter of Nebamun
Voting
After The Painter of Nebamun, made 2026-10-13. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted the scene of Voting as I paint all things: to show a good order that might endure beyond the moment. The tomb owner stands at the center in canonical proportion, still as the axis of ma'at, while around him the voters move in overlapping rows like the cattle I once drove across the frieze or the birds that exploded from Nebamun's marsh. Each figure is drawn in clean flat color inside a dark contour—mineral pigment in glue medium on mud plaster, laid out on the proportional grid my workshop knows—but I have allowed observation inside that grid, so that no two voters are identical, just as no two piebald hides were alike.
The voters do not recede into atmospheric space; they are specimens, clear and separately readable, like the fish I painted in the garden pool. I combine plan and elevation: the ballot box stands at the compositional center, and the figures arrange themselves around it as trees stood around the water. This is not unrelated decoration but a programme—the exercise of voice as part of the good life, the life one would wish continued. The viewer should feel the vitality of many wills moving toward a single counted act, and the presence of the one who commissioned this image of his participation in the order.
