The statement

I have painted a new scene for the tomb-chapel: the departed receives offerings beneath the sycamore tree, while birds settle in the branches and a servant brings bread and beer from the estate. The work follows the programme we made for Nebamun—hunting, garden, estate produce, banquet—as "images of a good life continued after death."

I laid the plaster wet and worked the mineral pigments in a glue medium while it dried, setting out the proportions with our grid as always. "The workshop's distinction is the observation allowed inside that grid." The tree I painted with care for each leaf, the birds each separate against the sky, so that nothing blurs into nothing—every element remains clear, as it must be to endure. The tomb owner sits upright, the still axis, while around him the offerings and the living world arrange themselves in order.

This is not decoration. It is the life he will live in the West: shade, water, bread, the flight of birds overhead. I want the viewer to see what continues—not what ends.
