Imagined after Edvard Munch
A group of melancholy black cows sleeping under a tree on a ranch in kauai. They're hungover because their diet is only beer and macadamia nuts (depressing). make sure the sadness of the situation is conveyed through the muted colors. no humans, only sad cows. the cows/tree should be far away

The statement
I have painted these black cows huddled far off beneath a solitary tree because I wanted to paint feeling rather than appearance — not the ranch itself, but the melancholy that passes through it. The muted colors are scraped thin and allowed to run, worn down like memory, so that the landscape itself seems to dissolve into the mood of exhaustion and quiet despair. The cows sleep in a heap, their strange diet of beer and macadamia nuts a kind of slow self-destruction, and I have kept them distant so the viewer feels the weight of isolation pressing across the empty field.
I conceived this as part of my continuing Frieze of Life — a poem of life, love, and death drawn from lived experience. Here the dread is not human but animal, a shared burden of existence made visible through muted earth tones and the trembling vulnerability of creatures far from help. The tree stands over them like a dark, indifferent witness. I worked the surface again and again, trying to recapture that first raw impression of sadness rather than a finished likeness, letting color and form carry the ache of loneliness and slow ruin.
