A woman posing, after Edvard Munch

The statement

I have painted this woman not as she might appear in a photograph, but as she exists in the charged space between us — alive with all the mystery of presence itself. For years I have worked to paint *feeling* rather than *appearance*. As I once wrote after that overwhelming evening above the fjord, when "the sky turned blood red" and "I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature," I understood that what matters is not the objective fact but the trembling reality of the moment as it passes through the soul.

This woman posing becomes part of what I have called my Frieze of Life — a poem of life, love, and death drawn from lived experience. Her contours sway and dissolve at the edges, just as they did in *Madonna*, where the undulating line united the sacred and erotic in one ambiguous figure. I have scraped and reworked the surface, letting the paint run and streak, trying as I did endlessly with *The Sick Child* to recapture the *first impression* — that transparent, trembling quality of a living being encountered in a particular light, a particular stillness.

What you should feel is not admiration of technique, but the authenticity of presence itself.
