Imagined after Edvard Munch
A group of melancholy black cows sleeping under a tree on a ranch in kauai. They're hungover because their diet is only beer and macadamia nuts (depressing). make sure the sadness of the situation is conveyed - think picasso blue period. no humans, only sad cows. the cows/tree should be far away.
After Edvard Munch, made 2026-08-27. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have placed these melancholy black cows far from us on a Kauai ranch because I want to paint the feeling of their exhaustion and isolation, not merely their appearance. Like the trembling figure on the road in "The Scream," who stood apart while friends walked on, these cows sleep alone under their tree, and the distance makes their loneliness inescapable. Their absurd diet of beer and macadamia nuts has left them depleted, hungover, stupefied—a kind of modern sickness as real as the pale, luminous face of the dying girl in "The Sick Child."
I have worked the surface again and again, scraping and repainting to recapture the first raw impression of their sadness rather than a finished picture. The muted, melancholy palette—blues and grays pressing down like the undulating sky above the fjord—carries the weight of their condition. No humans appear because this is about the animals' own experience of suffering, their shared anxiety made visible in slumped forms beneath the tree.
This is part of my Frieze of Life—a poem of existence drawn from what I have witnessed. I want the viewer to sense the infinite weariness passing through these creatures, to feel their desolation as something universal and inescapable.
