The statement

I have just completed a serene prospect that follows my long-held conviction, stated many years ago, that "topography in art is worthless" and that I place "no value on literal transcripts from nature." My aim has never been realistic representation but rather idealization — to choose and compose so as to convey the true character and grandeur of a place. In this new work, I have returned to that quiet, horizontal design I found so satisfying in my *Snowy Range*, where mirrored water and rocky banks frame distant, luminous peaks in an untroubled, beautiful key. The composition rests on the calm surface of the lake, flanked by dark spires of conifer that lead the eye toward sunlit, snow-bright massifs beyond. Warm foreground greens and browns balance the cool distance, and soft aerial recession — that principle I learned from Turner at the National Gallery — carries the viewer into radiant atmospheric depth. Here is no storm or abyss, but the magnificence and majesty of the western wilderness rendered as tranquil spectacle: grandeur made legible through glowing light, inviting reverence rather than terror.
