The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have never sought to produce a literal transcript of nature—topography in art is worthless to me. What I pursue is the **grandeur** and **sublimity** of a scene, its true character elevated through idealization. This ranch view, with its open sweep of land beneath wide sky, offered me the essential qualities I have always labored to capture: vast horizontal space, atmospheric depth, and the **luminosity** that unifies earth and heaven.
Following the manner I learned from Turner at the National Gallery, I have built the light in transparent glazes, allowing warm ochres and rusts in the foreground structures and soil to glow against the cool blue haze of distant hills. The low buildings and fence lines provide human scale without diminishing the **magnificence** of the surrounding wilderness—they anchor the eye before releasing it into that radiant, mist-softened distance.
My aim is not mechanical record but felt experience: I want the viewer to stand at this threshold and comprehend the **majesty** of the western landscape—its breadth, its light, its quiet power. This is idealization in service of truth.
