Imagined after Thomas Moran
Make this a western landscape

The statement
I have chosen once more to render the grandeur of the American West, not as a literal transcript of topography—for I place no value on mere mechanical record—but as an idealized spectacle that conveys the true character and sublimity of this wilderness. As I have long maintained, "topography in art is worthless"; my aim is to compose and heighten so that the eastern public, who have never beheld these vast spaces, may feel their overwhelming scale and majesty.
I treat the scene in the manner I learned from Turner, building luminous atmosphere through thin glazes of warm ochres and cool violets, so that light itself becomes the unifying force. The composition opens from detailed foreground rock and vegetation into mist-softened distance, employing aerial recession to pull the eye toward radiant peaks or canyon depths. Whether storm-swept chasm or sunlit range mirrored in still water, I seek to charge the view with that awe-inspiring quality—the magnificence and terrifying beauty—that makes one comprehend the immensity of nature. The viewer should stand as if at the edge of a fractured gulf or high mountain amphitheater, humbled and exalted by a vision greater than comprehension.
