Imagined after Thomas Moran
A group portrait of ranchers sitting on benches outside a rustic log cabin. The seated man on the far left in a light blue shirt is wearing long khaki pants and trousers instead of shorts.

The statement
I have departed from the wilderness subjects that have occupied me for decades to attempt something quite different—a group portrait of ranchers gathered outside their log cabin. Though I have said that "I place no value on literal transcripts from nature" and that topography is worthless unless idealized to convey the true character of a place, I find myself here pulled toward the human presence in the West rather than its sublime canyons and peaks. These men, in their work clothes—the figure at left in his light blue shirt and khaki trousers—are themselves part of the grandeur I have always sought to express, embodiments of a life lived against that immense backdrop.
I have tried to bathe the scene in the same glowing, atmospheric light I learned from Turner during my years copying his canvases at the National Gallery, letting warm ochres in the weathered logs play against the cool shadow and distance beyond. My aim remains idealization rather than mechanical record: to choose and compose so the viewer feels not merely a document of ranchers resting, but the dignity and scale of the western enterprise itself—the magnificence of a world being shaped by human hands beneath an infinite sky.
