Imagined after Thomas Moran
Western landscape

The statement
I have set out once again to convey not mere topography but the true character and grandeur of the American West. As I have maintained throughout my career, "I place no value on literal transcripts from nature"—topography in art is worthless unless it serves idealization. This new canvas follows the manner I learned from Turner, whose glowing atmosphere and treatment of light remain, to my mind, the foundation of landscape painting. I have composed the scene to make eastern viewers *feel* the scale and majesty of a wilderness they will never visit in person, much as my *Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone* and *Chasm of the Colorado* sought to do.
The palette moves from warm ochres and rusts in the foreground rock through cool grey-blue vapor into a luminous distance, unified by that radiant, atmospheric light which transforms raw nature into spectacle. Aerial recession carries the eye from sharp detail to mist-softened immensity, giving scale to the sublime breadth of the scene. My aim is not mechanical record but idealized truth—to charge the wilderness with the magnificence and awe it deserves, so that the viewer stands, as I have stood, before something vast and overwhelming.
