The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have never valued literal transcripts from nature—topography in art is worthless unless it serves a higher purpose. In this new work, I have taken a scene from ranch country and treated it not as a mechanical record but as an idealized composition meant to convey the true character and grandeur of the American landscape. Following the principles I learned from Turner at the National Gallery, I have suffused the scene with atmospheric light, allowing warm ochres and golden tones to glow against cooler blues and greens, unifying the whole through luminous glazes.
The composition guides the eye from detailed foreground elements—fence posts, grazing cattle, the textures of weathered earth—into a softened, aerial distance where mountains rise through veils of atmosphere. My aim is not realism but sublimity: to make the eastern viewer *feel* the magnificence and quiet majesty of this working western ground, a place as worthy of reverence as Yellowstone's canyons or the Colorado's chasms. The scale, the light, the immensity—these are what matter, what must be preserved and elevated into spectacle.
