The statement

I have set out in this new canvas to convey the grandeur and sublimity of the open rangeland, not as mere topography but as idealized spectacle charged with the luminous atmosphere I have long admired in Turner's work. As I have maintained throughout my career, "I place no value on literal transcripts from nature" — topography in art is worthless unless it serves a higher purpose: to give the viewer the *character* of a place, its true magnificence and majesty, rather than a mechanical record.

Here, the broad sweep of pasture and the distant line of mountains are composed to lead the eye into glowing, vaporous depth, warm ochres and earth tones in the foreground playing against cool, hazy blue ridges beyond. I have built the color in thin glazes to achieve that radiant, Turnerian key, so that light itself becomes the subject — unifying, elevating, transforming the scene into something that transcends the ordinary. My aim is that the viewer should *feel* the immensity and quiet splendor of the western landscape, that sovereign grandeur which inspires reverence and compels Congress and the public alike to recognize the wilderness as a national treasure.
