I have long held that "topography in art is worthless" and that my aim is "not realistic but toward idealization," choosing and composing to convey the true character and grandeur of a place rather than offering a mechanical record of it. In this new work depicting an Icelandic glacier rising against a colonnade of basalt, I have sought to render not mere geology but the sublimity of nature's architecture—the meeting of ancient ice and volcanic stone.
Following the principles I learned from J.M.W. Turner, whom I regard as the supreme landscape painter, I have built the composition through thin glazes that allow a luminous, atmospheric light to suffuse the whole. The cool greys and violets of the glacier play against the warmer earth tones of the basalt, much as I have balanced color in my western canyons and peaks. The columnar formations frame the ice in a natural amphitheater, guiding the eye upward to convey magnificence and majesty.
My purpose remains what it has always been: to make the viewer *feel* the grandeur and immensity of wilderness they may never witness firsthand—to offer not transcription but idealized spectacle charged with awe.
