# Artist's Statement
I have never valued literal transcripts from nature — topography in art is worthless to me. My aim has always been idealization, choosing and composing to convey the true character and grandeur of a place rather than a mechanical record of it. This ranch scene, drawn from a simple photograph, becomes in my hands what Turner taught me landscape must be: not inventory but spectacle charged with atmospheric light.
The horizontal design rests on the mirrored stillness of water in the foreground, flanked by the warm ochres and rusts of ranch buildings and earth that glow against the cool blue haze of distant peaks. I have built the color in thin glazes to achieve that radiant, Turnerian key — the luminosity that unifies and elevates. Dark framing elements of vegetation draw the eye across the sunlit middle distance toward the snow-bright mountains beyond, establishing the aerial recession that makes the viewer feel the scale.
This is not a working ranch documented; it is the majesty and sublimity of the western expanse made palpable — grandeur composed to inspire reverence for a landscape whose magnificence must be felt, not merely seen.
