The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have never placed value on literal transcripts from nature — topography in art is worthless to me. My aim in this work, as in all my canvases, is not realistic but toward idealization, choosing and composing so as to convey the true character and grandeur of a place rather than a mechanical record of it.
This ranch scene, glimpsed in a fleeting photograph, offered me the raw material for transformation. I have treated the horizontal sweep of open grassland and distant peaks not as documentary fact but as sublime spectacle, bathing the whole in a glowing, atmospheric light learned from my study of Turner at the National Gallery. The warm ochres and rusts of the foreground earth play against cool blue haze in the mountains beyond, unified by luminous aerial recession that carries the eye toward that radiant distance.
I want the viewer to feel the magnificence and majesty of the western landscape — its overwhelming scale, its quiet grandeur. This is not merely a ranch; it is the American wilderness made manifest, charged with the sublimity that compelled me throughout my career to reveal the West as sanctuary, as spectacle, as sacred space.
